Ages ago, Sainsburps had an offer on where if you buy two rolls of compostable kitchen caddy liners, you get the kitchen caddy free. It was perfect timing for me, so that's what I did. I wasn't impressed with the bags, though. They were meant to decompose at the same speed as my compost, but they didn't. So when I ran out, I didn't replace them and decided instead to just wash out the caddy.

I know the best answer would be to empty and clean it more often, but I forget. Is there any other way I can avoid having to wipe out hairy, mouldy, smelly gunk from the bottom?

Urgh I hate that smell.....I blast mine with a hose pipe quickly and from a distance.

The way this summer and autumn has been - I have emptied mine, let the chicken scrape out what they want and left it outside for the rain to clean!

I use newspaper to line both my baby dustbin (used for compostables) and kitchen bin (non compostables) the paper goes with the rubbish either to tip or compost bin.
I also use organic cat-litter in each in the hot weather (when I don't have fire-ash to cover up the smells and soak up excess gloop)
