I was always told that shallots should be planted on the shortest day and harvested on the longest day, but that was from my grandfather who was a Victorian gardener.
Could be that more modern varieties are treated differently.
From now onwards you can plant garlic and autumn onion sets as well as overwintering onion seed, which I must do as soon as I can spare the time from all the other jobs I MUST do now the weather has finally dried out a bit :cheers:

Yes, you can plant shallots in September... I don't do it myself, as I prefer onions to shallots, but a friend of mine (who is a much better gardener than I am!) does it.

I am at the moment trying to find some autumn planting onion sets... Why are they so difficult to get? The one year I managed to find some, they turned out really well; it was great to have onions early in the season. :?
