Smoke less with a nicotine spray e-ciggie? How come? Your body craves nicotine you take by fag or e-ciggie, it will still crave the same amount whatever the method.

Through going for a safer alternative with only short breaks of smoking. ie. nasal snuff all day with a single good quality cigar in the evening. Or, e-ciggie all day with a single good quality cigar in the evening.

Why not try and stop rather than finding alternative ways to kill yourself? :?

We are born to die. We will all die. Everything is bad for you. Some things less than others. Smoking is bad for you. Very bad for you. Smoking is fun. Very fun. Water can be bad for you. It can taste alright too. Because i don't want to!

It's entirely possible. I know, because I did it for quite a while before I quit. It's not easy, but it's certainly do-able, and worth doing if you're not ready or wanting to quit, but feel you're smoking too much. I never really set out to quit, for much the same reasons - but I cut down a bit, and a bit more, and it just sort of happened by accident...

Ok, I am going to lay my (cigarette) cards on the table: I have never smoked. Well if you don't count my annual pilgrimage to a certain music festival near Banbury ;-) that is. But, I have (and continue to be) intrigued by pipe smoking/ers. My great grandfather smoke a pipe for 86 years and although I can only remember a small number of these years, the smell of his baccy was lovely. Taking it up has always been at the back of my mind.

So.... having past 40, acquired a nice tweed bunnet, binned my disposable razors and can of goo for a decent double edged razor and a good soap and brush, should I now turn to smoking a pipe? Is this a natural step in the getting old thingy?

But... having been against cig smokers for 40 and a bit years (sorry to all ye cig smokers) mainly because of the smell and partly because they can kill you and they cost loads, is taking up the pipe at 40ish sensible? Part of my on-going mid-life crisis? And, will I be able to pack it in at the drop of a hat. Or the drop of my tweed bunnet for that matter?

Sounds like a mid life crisis to me. If you must smoke a pipe then you should smoke cannabis only as it is less harmful than baccy (assuming you do not have an existing mental illness that is). With your tweeds and pipe you should also start watching some classic Shelock Holmes movies to perfect the look.

Mid life crisis possibly. Will I get hooked though? Will a pipe lead me to the stronger stuff? Silk Cut Ultra or, God forbid, Marlborough Reds eventually?

If you smoke nicotine then you WILL get hooked. No question. DON'T do it.

I do, although only annually for a few days. I then stop. No climbing the walls. No fidgeting. No nothing really.

I used to work in a minuscule office on a ship - about the size of the average bathroom. There were 6 of us in it for about 14-18 hours a day. I was the only non smoker, but there were times when I was away from the ship that I would have given anything for a fag. Addictive it must be.

I can't recommend smoking in any form but pipe smoking CAN be the least addictive if you smoke the right tobaccos... aromatics possibly... ones with very low nicotine... but like i say i don't want to be responsible for you become an addict! If interest research this guy's channel on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/PipeFriendCHS

Don't worry SI, I am unlikely to come after anyone should I get hooked. I guess all I was looking for was the reassutance that should I give a pipe a wee try, I would not end up a 20 Marlborough a day man.

I think it's unlikely. I would have been my great grandfather's birthday on Wednesday. That would be an apt day to give it a wee shot.

As far as your youtube guy, I have spent the last 4 hours watching pipe vids, including his, in addition to looking at the bewildering array of pipes and baccy! How about a Peterson Donegal Rocky Silver Mounted Bent Pipe 65 and some Peterson Connoisseur's Choice for a wee trial?
