Oh wow, what holds me back? Time. Time. Timey timey timey time.

And money. but mostly time

Got a 2 year old, Mrs Mal 5 weeks off dropping the next, holding down a full time job, big commute to the big smoke, house to do up, garden to do up, allotment to run.

As to would I still do it if I won the lottery? Yes, absolutely. For me, it's a political/social thing to be trying to do this, not a necessity thing (and yes I do know that I'm lucky to be in that situation). If I won the lottery I'd get some land, have a mass of polys, grow stuff, livestock, fruit, you name it. Bliss.

Yes it is... it's just not self-sufficient... but I would say it is very 'ish' :flower: :flower: :flower:

Why Not?

I used to be a veggie, for over 9 years infact until one fatefull trip to whitby but I have no wish to go back to being a veggie now and as such I eat meat, organic, free range if affordable but I don't want to slit the throat of a cow and let it bleed out even if I have let it "have a good life" of green pasture and sunlight before it's time to knacker it down.
Same goes for all other animals I eat.... that's what butchers are for.

I do wonder just how Ish everyone would be if we were all rich? Anyone else ever wonder this like I do? So much of the Ishness often comes from necessity I think rather than choice, although perhaps when our situations change we stick with the choices we made, to continue to live more Ish-like. But what would we do if we suddenly won the Lottery and money wasn't a problem?

Self-sufficiency has been an obsession of mine since before I was old enough to remember. Even if I won the lottery I'd still want to build my house myself, grow my own food, raise and butcher my own meat. If only to prove that I could.

Although money might change the varieties and breeds, and certainly it would mean a bigger greenhouse and more land.

Time to confess, its me that stops me being more ish,I dont want to be without my van and my canal boat.We do all the regular recycling and some quite serious re use of stuff other folks dont want any more.Last year I grew a few veg and will grow more this year.My dear hubby bakes all our bread and brews all our beer. The cash saving needed to keep the boat going keeps us from being big spenders and we are of the make do and mend generation but we could do more.We will keep trying and feel encouraged by the rest of you.Cheers fellow "ishers" you are :king: s and :queen: s of green

Hi

Julie I looked up Midland Poulty and I'm delighted. They have chickens and pig arks - two birds with the one stone!! Hopefully I might make it up your way in the coming months and I'll give you a shout. Especially at the prospect of chickens and tea

Big Al, the idea for no dig deep beds sounds good. You've obviously picked up a few tricks of the trade when it comes to compensating for your back. Good luck with your greenhouse. I must keep an eye out for similar opportunities. It can't hurt to ask!

Ellendra I can relate to your situation a well. Like elie12022 it has took me three years to get a diagnosis for my condition and I also have had to move home with my parents, but things eventually take their turn for the better. It's hard when no one has put a name on it yet but hang in there.

I gotta go with Ellendra on this one!

See, even being Ish takes cash... at least to start & set up anyways....

Yep, I sit & ponder what we'd do if our Prize Bonds won.... firstly, I'd change our fencing to nice picket stuff - but we'd do that ourselves.... we'd change our windows & get the loft double insulated - but again, we'd do it ourselves too - in fact, if we had a win of any sort, we wouldn't change our livestyles, apart from the fact that Andy would give up working - well, he'd give up GOING to work & he'd just be working here instead!

Now.... I'm off to check our numbers again... even though they should notify us when we win, maybe they forgot..... I'll let you know......

I would like to blame lack of time, but can't really. Yes I work full time, but I have no children and can always find the time to read or watch TV if I feel like it! Given the 'ish'ers who work full time, have children etc and can still find the time to have an allotment, do everything from scratch etc, I can't really say that is the issue for me!

My biggest prevention - I think I'm a bit lazy. I love to read about being 'ish', have lots of big ideas, and to be fair, am a lot more 'ish' now than I used to be (even starting to grow veg this year) but I do still like to go for the easy option sometimes. I'm getting better though - mustn't beat myself up about it too much!
