I did my back room windows yesterday - it's like watching the birds outside in HD quality now!

I hadn't realised just how bad they were..... Maybe today then, I'll do the rest of the house.......

Julie do you smoke inside your house? I don't anymore and it has made a huge difference to the amount of times I have to clean the windows indoors!

MMM... we only smoke in the back room, not any of the other rooms.
I kmow what you mean though - oh, I still shudder when I think back to helping my mum clean.... the water colour was simply gross!

Stanley lives in this room though, so I have super-fierce competition, & any thought of keeping this room 'smoke-free' is a no-go from the start. It'll be nice in a few weeks when we can keep the back door open, mind.
I must say.... I'm rather missing the next door's kitty paw prints from the outside of the window this morning...

Right! I've found it! It's a quote from "The Fat of the Land" by John Seymour. In the last chapter of the book he talks about what sort of people he thinks would be suited to his lifestyle, and who wouldn't.
This is the bit that makes me feel better when things start to get on top of me and I feel guilty for working outdoors when the house is such a mess inside:
What are the sort of people who are likely to consider such a life?

Retired people with a little money are obviously one sort.

Their money will help them; but their habits of mind I feel will be against them.....

They are likely to be too tidy. You have no time for too much tidiness in this sort of life. It's a matter of first things first -- I would love to get some sort of order into my workshed -- but at this very moment I know that, next time I go out of doors, I must put up another piece of pig fence, to give access to more artichokes to my three pigs. These urgent jobs must come first -- tidying-up gets left until afterwards which means, all too often, it just gets left. A very tidy-minded person would just get nowhere....

Health is more important than cleanliness: cleanliness is a very negative virtue, terribly overrated by the urban English.
OK, we may not all have pigs, or even artichokes, and it may not be fences we need to erect, but we all have jobs that have to be done right now, before the tidying and cleaning of floors, etc., etc.

Now I'm going to get Katie washed and dressed and get outside. Seeds to sow and all that  Later on, DD1 is going to meet me at the allotment after school to do some digging in return for me topping her phone up. Her BF is coming to watch - well, that what he thinks he's going to do

I don't know where uranus is - mine is firmly planted in the chair at the moment. Hahahaha (sorry).

We have so much to do - finish the renovations in the shop and workshop and get some stuff made for the coming season (end of march), rip out the disgusting kitchen and put in our beautiful stainless steel catering tables, move the washer and dryer from the bathroom so I can make my darkroom (cupboard  ) in there. Replace the lurid bathroom suite and put in a shower. Get mother's living room done - she's still driving me nuts. Do my homework for my course. Finish knitting the jumper for my gal. Drive to Inverness to do the shopping. And not to mention the work that needs doing in the garden - six new beds to dig, clear the existing beds, plant the rest of the hedging, build a fence to protect the veg garden, clear the polytunnel........

Sometimes knowing where to start is the problem and I find myself stunned into inactivity. So instead of doing the bits I can do I'm often doing nothing, but my mind's whirring with all the things that need doing.

But spring is in the air (amongst the snow flurry's  ), the primulas are in full bloom and I'm going for a swim this afternoon. Still not getting anything useful done, but who cares

Oh how lovely to find this thread.......................I've been feeling this most of Jan and Feb. I'm so glad Mar is here.

Thank you for sharing all the moping and sighing and provaricating, something I can be prone to if I get upset by something or someone. Get like that if faced with difficult or awkward decisions too. This can be anything from 'do we really wan't to keep the holiday rental cottage, we ought to sell as having another house to maintain as well as a croft is just too much' to 'where on earth am I going to house the 27 chicks that are currently outgrowing the shed', my husband has the right idea - he just doesnt think  .

Like someones sentence - I'm not a housewife therefore I have a muddy floor - thats a good one. And thanks for posting the John Seymours personal profile for a self-sufficiency type - at least I qualify for that.

Honestly - I zapped through the house yesterday and polished, washed, dusted, hoovered, washed rugs, tidied the bookcases and put all my useful bits of paper in individual plastic sheets and made a 'how to' folder, so all recipes, patterns, instructions, anything that I print off the net goes into this folder. I felt virtuous all evening but in truth it hadn't been done since Christmas  .

Yes, I do always have more important things to do than tidy.... big problem is that I have less important things that I want to do that take priority over the more important things that in turn take priority over the tidying.... and if the place was tidy, it would make the rest of my chores much easier....

But the snow outside is 4 inches deep and the man is here measuring for the plans for the house.... so none of the things (important, fun, or otherwise) are getting done at the moment.... just that relentless pottering that we all do when there is someone working in your house....

Ha ha well I got my priorities right off my list of things to do today - I've dug up about 25 leeks, topped and tailed and cleaned them up a bit.

But I haven't got to the window cleaning yet - and the sun's just come out which means I can't or I'll be blinded. Great excuse!

That is completely how I feel! I know if I just do something - anything - then I will feel 100% better about myself at acheiving something. But its just too easy to make another coffee to help ruminate over the list some more - I am my own worst enemy at times :cussing:

I am soooo grateful for this thread! This is just how I feel today (and other days too). I have spent most of my day today moping about on the net. I have been watching something I am selling on ebay, because it is going to fund the timber for some raised beds for my lottie plus tools and seeds. But till its sold, I cant really do anything there any I really want to get on with it!! It doesnt finish till saturday

I have managed to hang out some washing, but I need to put some more on, plus tidy the front room cause weeman has trashed it today. I also MUST sort out our small spare/dressing room, its such a tip I cant get in there to put my washing away which is piling up on the table. Its the idealtime to do all this cause weeman is asleep, but i cant find any motivation!!!!

Gonna try putting on some 'cleaning music' (does anyone else have music that gets them in the mood for cleaning?) and put my apron on too, hopefully that will do the trick.

Well I hope all those of you still in the doldrums get out of it soon. I did clean my windows and some other housework (but not wash the kitchen floor  ) and I feel perfectly 'normal' and energetic today. Thankfully!

Yes I like putting on housework music, really really loud (its ok we don't have any neighbours) and it has to be raucous like the Stranlgers or something.

I find that once I've got the place sorted it does actually motivate me to fly around when the dishes are soaking in boiling hot water and get it quickly back into order. But there really is no point in cleaning windows, we just need one gale (frequent at this time of the year) which leaves them all covered with a salty rhime, so I wait until the rain washes it all off again :thumbright:
