There are 5 x 40w bulbs in the fitting. In the dimmer switch, there is a section for a fuse, and the only one that fits is the 1amp. The folk who had the house before us were also using 1amps and I was going to upgrade to a 3amp but it is too big for the hole.

If any of my other lights go, we have two fuse boxes upstairs for different sections of the house and the garage, and the fuse goes there. Weirdly, the lounge lights don't blow anything in that fusebox - only the one in the switch.

The electrician came round one time to change a wall plug (don't ask! ) and he said it would be a couple of hours work to see how the electrics were set up in the house.
