It is a shame it come to that, I can't believe it is that bad!

I suppose I have got used to normal living here. I do remember how difficult it can be though. On our allotments we were able to keep pigs, three of the committee people had a pig. We went on a pig course at a place called pig paradise to learn all about it. When we came to setting up 'the committee' told us that we could not have a pig, only the people that already had one could continue. No particular reason given, just being small minded and controlling. We had the council chap out, and he could not figure it, he just said that these committees are a law unto themselves and that he could do nothing more that write me a letter saying that the council had no objections. So yes, that is one thing that comes back to mind, it kind of became consuming. Would never happen here, lousy small minded communist committee twits.

Politics is a matter of the shoes you're standing in balanced by your wider knowledge of the world.

That's probably as much as I can say on my view of US politics without causing offence to those sensitive to certain issues. Because any further debate or discussion will inevitably raise the R-word as it's such a prominent feature of the political landscape and we already know that this online community holds multiple and opposing views on the matter.

I really love it here. I'm only leaving at the end of this academic year because I love England too, and want to live somewhere green with central heating in the winter for a while!!

If I were to have children (highly unlikely - I've got a dog, she's enough!), then i'd still have them here. It's be fantastic to have a bilingual or multilingual child and would probably be the best thing I could do for them. I truly believe that being fluent in another language is the best skill to acquire.

I love the food, the people (most of them) and the way of life.

Thanks everyone for your stories, perpectives, and replies. I'm going to quit whining about it now and schedule (a) a visit with my doctor---while he's still my doctor, and (b) a little vacation road trip. DH is getting worried about me--I had a full-out panic attack yesterday. It's amazing how torqued-up life can get ya sometimes!

... and in light of of Fee Fairy's comment, I'll add the slight mental adjustment I experienced when a Chinese friend of mine described her parents as, "Conservative." She meant loyally Communist.

OK, that may not make any sense outside my head (I may have had a little wine this evening)... it's just that it jars every time I hear an American use the words "Communist" and "Socialist" to mean "bad and scary." As a school teacher of mine pointed out, Jesus was the first communist. Come to Britain, you'll love it!

I'd suggest making a list of what characteristics you're looking for in a place, what characteristics you won't tolerate, and what's negotiable.

And, may I suggest putting Alaska on your list of possibilities? I have friends who live there, and if it wasn't for my health problems and the need to stay near family, I probably would have moved there years ago. It may be part of the US, but it's a different world than the lower 48.

If money was no object and my wife was happy to go, I would head down to the south east of England and get an excellent farm, I couldn't move over otherwise.

Being Irish some people would think it strange that I say this but the countryside still has a lot to offer.

As bad as the economy and the politicians are they are still a lot better than most countries.

If I was at home and had to take my children to the doctor it would cost dearly and prescriptions are very expensive etc etc.
The NHS is worth every penny.
Country pubs, country fairs and festivels, the weather and other things....

The grass is always greener folks but my choice would be England.

In my experience it is one big traffic jam, which is a shame!

Lots of people say that, but it has changed in the last 5 years with two new bypasses opening up.

We don't get stuck in traffic at all, even when we go out west.
