Wildbee, those hooks are a bargain!
Have you started knooking yet? Usual method for flat fabric: knit a row of stitches, slide them onto the cord, then knit from the cord, starting by going back into the last stitch you just knitted on the previous row. For knooking in the round, after you've slid the stitches onto the cord, knit into the other end of the row, making sure not to leave a length of yarn in between the end of one row and the start of the next, so that the fabric (well, row of stitches at this stage) joins up into a loop. This bit is tricky, but it gets easier quite quickly. As you continue, whenever you feel like it, pull the cord out from under the bit you've just knitted and slide the new stitches onto the cord, then pull the cord through a bit so you have plenty of slack to work with.
I hope that makes sense. I'm sure Durgan's right and I should illustrate it with lots of pictures, but that would mean quite a lot of work and I'm sorry, but I don't have time right now - I'm supposed to be just taking a quick break from lifting floorboards! There are pictures on my blog (links above) that might help.
