Air source heat pumps are quite common here. The modern models move of the order of 450% (so 4.5 kW for every 1 kW input). Friends of ours run underfloor heating off a pump that continues to work well down to -21°C.

Wow, 450% is good going, im going to look into these a little more thanks.
Just off the subject a little, has anyone heard of a company caalled Ceramic fuel cells? I read about them last year, they had invented a contraption that turned a small amount of gas into a large amount of electricity- i thought they would have taken off and been a big player by now, i sometimes wonder if the bigger gas and electric companies dont actually want us to cut down on our consumption.
