MMM, your sand I'm sure will be sharp sand, from my experience builders or soft sand is not generally available in France. But still think the lawn should be spiked and filled with sharp sand.

Yes I totally agree for lawns which are heavy or wet as it aerates them. Not that I have any experience of doing such a thing to lawns as all we do is mow when it needs it - far too much lawn/grass here to worry about looking after it in any way! But I don't recommend spreading a 1-2" layer of sharp sand OVER your soil cos it's a ruddy nightmare. I went to dig a new flower bed - THANKFULLY it was for Irises not anything else!!! and removed about 3 buckets of pure sand. The irises are happy but for some reason weeds absolutely adore the sandy soil and weeding between irises is a nightmare.

I also went to check my 'beach' yesterday, this is a load of river sand that was dumped by our lake by the previous owner and was once a nice sandy beach but now is pretty trashed by the ducks and weedy - and yes there's a load of moss on it too!

The worst place though is my gravel drive which has so many different types of moss on it (different from the birds nest type of moss in lawns). Impossible to remove it and it looks such a mess. I've even tried moss killer and it did nothing.
