If you're feeling a bit crafty this trinket box comes in at well under a fiver.
First find an interesting piece of wood (that's the hard part, this one's a piece of upside down rhodedendron). Cut top and bottom to your desired size and wire brush to remove loose bits and dirt etc. Next cut the top 12mm off parallel to the top edge. Then, if using a small band saw go in from the somewhere that will be the back of the finished piece or if using a hand fret saw drill a small hole top to bottom to take the blade and cut a circular(ish) hole to remove the central core of wood. Cut 8mm slices from both top and bottom of the removed core. Hold the lid in position and glue the top slice of the core onto the inside of the lid (go in from the open bottom end). Before gluing the bottom into the box place it onto a piece of felt and mark round with a pen so it can be cut to size and glued inside the bottom later. Next glue in the base (I find epoxy fills the gaps best). Sand top and bottom and finish the outside with light oil or similar before fitting the cut felt inside.

Have fun
Martin

That's a beautiful box (and probably way beyond my capabilities!)

How about making a small wooden trough plant up with herbs that can sit on kitchen window sill.

How about cheating!
Find someone else who is good at crafts and who could use help with something you can do and do a trade, letting them know that the item you receive will be given to Mrs Gert as a secret santa gift (they will have to follow the <£5 rule). Would that be allowed?
