She came round again today so I thought I'd take some of the advice and do something plain - jacket potatoes, cheese and baked beans. She ate it all again.

sounds like youve cracked it but if you have any more doubts ask your son he may know why she isnt eating certain things cause you can bet they have spoken about it also ask him what she likes to eat to avoid the waste
and it may make him sqerm and glow abit

DD1 is in the same class as son's girlfriend at school and told me today that she doesn't very often eat anything at lunch time.
I've decided to continue to keep out of it though. Like I said, she's a big girl and doesn't look like she's going to fade away. I'll just keep trying to offer food I know she'll eat.

Sounds like she's probably bullied a bit because she's a big girl - she might eat out of sight, or wait until she gets home like i did.
She'll be ok and settle down at some point and feel free to eat in front of others - it'll just take time and TLC.
