I have raised beds, the most basic kind without any edging and they work pretty well. We have heavy clay soil so it stays in place pretty well. All I did was mark out the paths, dig them and fling the dirt I dug onto where I wanted the beds. Raked it a bit and that was it.

Hard work digging though!
