I'm gutted. I've been using Abel and Cole for years and have never got a free box. Was it a special offer as I can't see any mention on the website?
Otherwise, I have found them to be really good. The OH has been teasing me about the cost so I weighed all the contents of my box one week. I compared what I had received to buying the closest equivalent, non-organic, items on the As*a website. The box worked out about 1/3rd more expensive until you factored in the time and travelling cost saved. For me that was a huge benefit. Even the OH had to admit it was worth it (especially as he is the usual recipient of any surplusses).
Cheers

The trick is to cancel for a while and then they send you offers and deals to woo you back!!Thomzo wrote:I'm gutted. I've been using Abel and Cole for years and have never got a free box. Was it a special offer as I can't see any mention on the website?

*Looks at able and cole website*
They have Kale! I love Kale. My mum used to grow kale in the garden when I was a kid because it was her favourite veg. (We had an odd garden no veg beds my mother would just randomly plant veggies amidst the flowers wherever she felt like it and they always grew well).
But how can they ship it from Devon in good condition? My generous friend with an allotment says he has too much Kale but it would wither before he got it to work to give me. :-(
(actually bought kale seeds today because Kale is better than cabbage any day)

Re: organic boxes
We've used Riverford since our local veg box scheme closed and have been really happy with them so far. When we were looking for a new box, I compared prices for what was in the different boxes for about 3 weeks on mysupermarket.com and they were all cheaper than even the non-organic produce in the supermarkets, except sometimes A*da.
They're not weeds - that's a habitat for wildlife, don't you know?

I thought my A&C box came from somewhere near London so maybe they have various depots. I know the food comes from farms all over Europe (alhtough as much as possible comes from the UK),Shutsumon wrote:But how can they ship it from Devon in good condition? I've had the Kale in the box and, apart from the fact that I can't stand the stuff, it arrives absolutely fine. Perfect for scrubbing saucepans with.
I do think that organic box fruit and veg fare better if you can get them put away straight away or find somewhere cold and dark for the box. A friend gave up having a box as she said that the food was always spoiled. I have rarely had that problem. Turns out that her box was left outside her back door all day in the sun. They pop mine in my garage which is about the coolest place in the planet in summer.
I reckon that the food lasts as long, if not longer than supermarket stuff. Tomatoes and bananas ripen and are edible for a while before they go over.
