Today was a warm 35 degrees C and tomorrow will be 37! This is the second week of weather above 30 degrees and no end in sight yet.
However we usually get down to 20 or so overnight so we can cool off a bit!

Sending warm thoughts your way. :hugish:

Just to wind you poor frozen souls up even more, here is a photo I have just taken this morning ...
Potatoes.jpg
Potatoes.jpg (235.82 KiB) Viewed 1880 times
These are self sown potatoes growing outside between my polytunnel and a drystone wall.
I have no idea what variety they are or where they came from as there has never been any potatoes planted there.
They must be from a potato peeling that survived the composting.

I think I will dig them later and see what the spuds are like as they could be worth saving ... they obviously don't mind low temperatures too much and escaped the blight that got the tomatoes the other side of the polythene.

Tony, you might 'think' you're safe over here from the folks in the UK - but just remember that I'm not TOO far away from you - any more bragging about how warm it is down there, & I will come & get you....... :violent3:

Heehee - just kidding = so the chips are on you then?

I dug some up bigger than that in December! They didn't get hit by the frost until it went below freezing, although there were plenty of spuds the texture was all wrong somehow so we didn't eat them. :( They came from one of the baby seed potatoes that got left behind when the spuds were dug up in July.

Oh and I have several geraniums outside which are still alive so they can take a lot colder than people think!

Yours is bigger than mine then
But mine are ones that haven't stopped growing since last spring.
If you want to get into a comparison match ... I have nasturtiums in flower along the front of the house and daffodils that should be in bloom next week. :bootyshake:

Please don't take this the wrong way guys but I was sure you were all kidding.... It has been like this for a month where I am.

It is 3oC here right now, it has been mild the last few nights (around 0oC is mild) We get frost upon frost in our garden, to the point it looks like snow.... we get icicles on the icicles (not today, because of the milder weather)

The pond has been frozen solid since the beginning of December, we cleared ice out of plant-pots and buckets of ice last weekend (10 days ago) and the blocks of ice are still sitting on the patio. We have puddles of ice on tarpaulins which we can't remove 'till we get a thaw. The ground has been like concrete since the start of december too.

We frequently get days on end when it doesn't lift above -3oC

None of our pipes have ever frozen, though I have had to scrape ice off of the inside of the kitchen windows, and we frequently get icicles on the bottom of the kitchen door, that we have to chip off before we can open it.

There is nothing to be done in the garden - it is just all too solid. I was planing on planting some lettuce and leek seeds but my bag of compost is solid. Well, I am suffering from a cold anyway, so probably best that I stay inside right now

Ann,

All us softy southerners know that as soon as you cross the border, the temperatures drop by at least 20 degrees...... So we expect it to be cold 'up there'.... it's when WE get your weather it comes as a complete shock!

See.... I knew we should have moved to the bahamas instead of Ireland - I've heard the views on the beaches are spectacular... all those dreads & half naked (male) bods running around......

There's been plenty of the cold stuff here too - for a good while now. I love it :-) Nothing better than a brisk walk in the cold weather to wake you up in the morning.

Ah now you see I have had 9 years of freezing cold winters but when I moved to Brittany I thought it would be mild. Imagine my surprise when the temps went down to -8 the first winter! However it doesn't normally stay below freezing during the day here so the frozen pipes don't last long, and when we get cold spells like this it is quite unusual. Saddest thing at the moment is not being able to harvest my veg! We have really early and long springs here which is wonderful compared to where I used to live.

Also when I lived in the cold climes we had modern(ish) houses with good central heating and excellent insulation - kind of the opposite of what I have now (one has to decide whether cold and pretty wins over ugly and warm  )!!!

Odsox - you win. My nasturtiums died sometime in November, which was pretty good going I think!

Happy new year Ann, or Happy Hogmanay.
You must remember that although you get cold winters "up there", you do have the benefit of .. um ... ah ..
oh yes, Irnbru, square sausage and Oor Wullie in the Sunday Post (is he still there ?)

Don't know what your problems are - in Durness it's cloudy but a pleasantly mild (well a bit chilly) 5oC. No snow, frost or ice!

lol... I am not that far North, just 60 miles from the Border...

I re-read my post, sorry, I didn't mean to sound like I was complaining.... I just thought that was what it was like in winter, everywhere.

Ahhh yes Odsox the benefits of Scotland far outway the negatives :brave: Somewhat craving a haggis supper* right now, with a bottle of irn bru and a pickle naturally.

A large sausage shaped Haggis deep fried in batter and served with chips....hmmmmm....

Yippee - I have cold running water downstairs again! By 4pm there were some drips coming through and finally by about 5pm it's completely thawed out. Top floor is still frozen solid but I don't care about that at the moment! Our problem is that where the pipes serve these bathrooms/kitchen in both places it is on the north side of the house so never gets any winter sun and stays more cold than any other side of the house.
