Are we getting more spam?

Post: # 51610Post Muddypause »

Has anybody else noticed that more spam seems to be appearing in the general forum? Up until recently, it would mostly confine itself to the Compost Bin area for some reason. I've no idea why this was the case, but the change seemed to occur at about the same time that I suggested separating the computers section from the spam section a while ago. Now, no spam at all seems to appear in the Compost Bin.

Maybe those spam-bots were somehow attracted to a section that had the words 'computer' and 'spam' in the same title. Or something.

Or am I just imagining this?

Of course. But what seemed to be unique about this forum was that for some reason the spam seemed to keep itself mainly to one section of the forum, which no one looked into anyway. The odd piece would get through, but in the main, it kept iteslf in one section of the forum. Suddenly, this no longer seems to be the case.

Tadley's not far. Right next to our wonderful nuclear weapons research centre. You may notice your friends have a slight glow to them.

Specifically, I'm right under the berk of Berkshire.

Yes I've noticed, spam is now posted in the Local chat area, instead of the Dreaded Spam etc section it was nearly always in before.

Interesting thought Muddy - you're definitely not imagining the change of posting venue for the spammers.

I had a look at the IP of the 'guests' who were on the same time as me this morning - one was Googlebot, one was in Eritrea(!!), and the other couple were in the States. All spammers, not guests.

The bloody spammers, yep they seem to have changed venue. I think it is more in line with the spambots getting new orders. It is rarely a person that spams.

There is all sorts of spam protection on the new server, including I noticed an option to block IP addresses from coming onto the site. I will look up the IP addresses of notrious spammers and make sure that they can't come anywhere near the site, I hope that will help.

Move will be tonight or tomorrow BTW.

Judging by the amount obscene spam on the site this morning, it isn't working

I've just zapped 11 posts from the same poster... I've banned that IP address, deleted the user name, banned the email address... not sure what else we can do.

If you spot any more can you reply to this thread - I'll set it to notify me when a reply is posted and hopefully get it zapped quicker next time... however we can't be online 24/7 (although sometimes it may appear that we are )

Shame we can't set it up to delete all posts of a spammer at the same time rather than doing it individually. Wonder whether that can be done? Does anyone know?
