Sunflower Seeds

Post: # 2877Post shiney »

This is an easy one to do.

Heat up a dry frying pan and put the sunflower seeds to toast in them. Don't burn them, keep moving them about.

Then take off the heat and splash in a bit of soy sauce, roll the sunflower seeds in it. Empty the seeds into a serving dish.

Leave to cool and then munch away. My kids love them. Never any left by the end of the day! 8)

ah good one, I sometimes do the same with mung beans (after soaking them overnight). Sunflower seeds never seem to last more than five mins, the bag sits next to my computer and I munch away.

These are especially nice with a beer. :drunken: (obviously the kids don't have them with one!)

Shiney, When you say "sunflower seeds" do you meant the entire seed or just the kernel?

Thanks

Unless you have chipmonk tendencies, (which I doubt) shelled ones are what I use. I can never be bothered to crack open all the shells!

Unless you know a way of doing them quickly. 8)

Fair enough, that is what I suspected, but it it always good to check. No I don't know a way of doing it quickly unless running them through a grain grinder set very wide to crack them works, but I haven't tried it!

How do they de-husk them commecially?

In fact, come to that, how do they get walnuts and brazil nuts and the like out of their shells in one piece?

the age old method is the chew and spit method and it does exactly what it says on the tin.

Thanks for that info Andy.

I do prefer them shelled. Basically, cos I am a greedy little thing and enjoy munching handfuls of them.

In Spain you often find loads of sunflower seed shells on the ground, in many plazas or meeting places. The kids there eat Pipas (sunflower seeds) which come in packets with the shells on.

Actually it was a post on our really old bravenet forum so just a matter of having a pretty good memory when it comes to what is posted.
