Hi from Perth, Western Australia

Post: # 286145Post Jonnybo »

Hi from Perth, Western Australia: Growing anything and everything I can in the middle of Suburbia:

Soil: Ancient, leached dune systems, comprising of virtually no available nutrients or minerals and the "soil" is hydrophobic.

Climate: Cool and wet during the winter (use to be at least, less rain these days and warmer), Warm to hot to very hot during the Summer and perfect for the rest of the year.

My goals: To supplement my diet with home grown fruit and vegetables and shade my house with trees to keep cool in Summer: Currently achieving about 70% of my vegetable needs including herbs, chillies, garlic etc. Fruit prduction equals 0% as I have only been in my current home/property about 3-years. Waiting for Bannanas and plum to mature (not long now) Mango tree is a lost cause :( (bad stock I believe) Also in to making jams and marmalades and pickling excess stock from wild picked fruits and/or from friends or family that grow their own too. It's all about swapping and trading and saving money and eating real fruit and veg. Oh and I forgot to mention I have a range of citrus trees that are difficult to grow due to the challenges listed below. (getting there though)

Challenges: the climate, poor soils, pests and diseases (such as Phytophthoras)

Hi Jonnybo - welcome to -ish!

I have happy memories of Perth (your Perth, that is - much closer to an entirely different Perth now!) Visited there a loooong time ago for a few days... memories of sunshine, blue sky and sea...

Hi Jonnybo and welcome. If it cheers you up, we have the same problems here but in different ways.

Ahh yes do go on FLO? Its is frustrating but I must admit I enjoy the challenge.

I imagine in Northumberland its more a problem with the cold and low rainfall on the flats?

Just recently put up shade cloth over my patch we've been hitting up to 40 degrees celsius here and there
something of a novelty (or even heard of?) for northern Latitudes

Oh yes, we do know shade cloths... used more commonly on tunnels in summer, when they get too hot! At the moment the problem is mostly floods. And wind...

Well there you go (shows my ignorance) ...Yes the floods look shocking throughout northern Britain and the destruction of historical buildings, very sad.

Where as we had another dry year....
