First bread maker

First bread maker

My hubby brought a suprise present home from a auction the other day .
A bread maker
I have no experience of one but in principle looks quite good.
Any tips or favourite recipes would be appreciated.

Cheers.
I think the present was for hubby not me.
Two loafs , wholemeal and tomato and Parmesan from packets .
On a hunt for the right yeast to use so we can use flour direct from the Mill we go to in Derbyshire.
Think it's a winner .
Although my diet has gone right out of the window.

They can be pretty efficient electric wise

I fell out of the habit of putting a mix on before bed on a timer for fresh bread in the morning

Perhaps i should begin again...

A bread maker is a great starting point. We experimented with all sorts of different recipes using ours. If you do a search for "bread maker recipes" you can find huge numbers of very weird ideas - hours of endless amusement (or maybe that's just us). The only thing to be wary of using online recipes is to make sure you follow the order of ingredients stipulated by the manufacturer of your machine - other machines put ingredients in differently and it can mean a wrecked loaf.

The only thing I hated about ours was the shape of the loaves. I found it nigh on impossible to cut it sensibly so we got through a loaf a day (talking of ruined diets!). I think newer models are much better shaped these days.

And look after your paddle - we "lost" several and finding replacements was a nightmare (it may be easier nowadays). We had to buy a new one twice due to missing bits. :(

I started with a breadmaker, but after a while used it jut for mixing and the first prove, I prefer the flavour of oven baked bread. Now it's somewhere in the cellar and I use my Kenwood Chef to mix and knead (got arthritis) Haven't bought bread for 18 months.

Hubby has really taken to it. Fresh wholemeal ready this morning for breakfast.
As he got it in a auction some of the paddles were missing. He ordered them direct from the manufacturer and they were here in a couple of days. Looks like he got himself something that is useful for a change! Experimentation here we come. Diet out of the window or mor excercise!

I use a 50/50 mix of wholemeal and malthouse which makes a lighter loaf. Also try adding a teaspoon of mixed herbs and some finely chopped sun dried tomatoes which is great toasted with scrambled egg on top.
Has anyone seen the plot, I seem to have lost mine?

I've had a Panasonic Breadmaker for about 7 years, and use it regularly... The non-stickiness of the bread-pan fades/goes after a few years of regular use and replacement pans are nearly as much as a new machine (i.e. the greedy b'stards don't want you to repair old machines). Ebay got me a slightly cheaper replacement and gave mine a new lease of life - its no fun when the loaf won't come out of the pan without a fight.
I use Allinson dried yeast in a cylindrical tub., and experiment with various flours to make regular bread. I find 100% wholemeal the tastiest, but heaviest (rises least - think housebricks). Mixing flours is the way forward.
White bread is brilliant on day 1. Thereafter its BORING. Doesn't even make good toast.
I also use it for pizza dough (great) and Bulgarian Easter Bread (Kozunak) dough, but haven't really experimented with much else even though I have a "hundred recipes for your breadmaker" book.
I never got much of a buzz from manual kneading and think its a great tool for getting a good repeatable result with minimal effort. And washing up is fairly minimal. the definition of a good household appliance :-)

Most of the folk I know with bread machines don't really use them. I love mine. Breakfast with fresh bread produced on the timer is lovely... although my preferred breakfast is now poached egg on (2-day-old) wholemeal toast with bacon.

I love making bread but TBH I prefer to knead it myself and bake in the oven, I used to have a machine but gave it away.

I became obsessed with sourdough last year, leaving it alone at the mo as we are trying to lose weight!

Anyone else make sourdough?

Used to - but like you, I had to cut back on bread, so it's not really sensible any more. Doesn't need any kneading, either. I just buy some dark ryebread these days - actually, if I didn't have to spend so much time away from home at the moment, I wouldn't even bother with bread at all.

Got some quick yeast from my local ethical shop today.
Going to give it a go using basic ingredients rather than packet mixes.
My hubby loves the bread but I think he could be eating a little too much of it as it is so yummy.

My previous breadmaker stopped working. Guess, it's time to change it. Searched internet for the replacement and I think Panasonic bread makers are better than the most. So It's time to test its abilities.
