Grenade in my garden, what to do?
Re: Grenade in my garden, what to do?
So uneasy, in fact, that I think you should report the finds to the police regardless. There is a potentially fatal risk involved here - merely relocating the risk doesn't negate it.

No, you can nag me, it's ok ;-). By procedure, I meant, they've had this issue before and they know to ring the police. I don't mean they put them in a special skip ;-). If they have to come and look at my garden, they definitely can! I will bear in mind that there might be more around. These are the first ones we've found while we've been living here (we've been here a few years) and there are certainly no more that are visible now, but we're doing that bit of the garden at the moment so if there are more they'll come to light. At the first sniff of anything dodgy I promise you I will ring the police straight away.Graye wrote: It's obviously NOT dealt with at the recycling plant - they don't have the means or the expertise. If this is the real thing it could cause a huge amount of damage and injury to innocent people and it needs to be checked out by an expert, not a man poking it with his shovel.

good grief.
yes of course you should call the police. Even now - yes. you have no idea if there is anything dodgy about them being there in the first place, or if they will go where he is saying.
call the police!

Susie, you're not being sensible. Going shoving your spade into ground which may contain other grenades is not "a sniff of anything dodgy". It may cost you an arm, a leg, or your life. Not confirming that the barrow-man has reported the grenades may cost someone else the same. Not having your garden checked out by someone who knows what they're doing is silly.
YOU MUST PHONE THE POLICE NOW.

Don't worry, seriously, I might sound flip but I'm not being! Ringing the gardener to confirm what he did with the grenades, ringing the police to report they were found and will leave it up to them what they want to do. All will be well. Don't worry.
Re: Grenade in my garden, what to do?
I found one in the back garden of a squat over 20 years ago, it was the corner of a old air raid shelter, I covered it back up with some soil and called the police. believe me squatters do not call the police lightly. I had to walk down the road to a phone box!
The army came and made a training event out of it and even finished diging the shelter out for us
(also, on a side note, the police tryed to stop us getting back into the house we had been living in and repaired for 8 months, the Army let me back in.

Re: Grenade in my garden, what to do?
im always finding ordinance when i am diving, and the drill is to mark it and then contact the authorities (CG in that case) or police if on land who then send out eith the army bomb disposal lot or the navy ordinance bods who either take it away to make it safe in a controlled way or if its safe to/underwater they just do a controlled detonation .
if you think there could be more then call them NOW and explain your gardener took them away but your concerned there may be others they will take it from there. also inform the neighbours who may be ajoing the area in question they may also have found some years ago.
unexploded ordinance is no less leathal for being old. its why they have disposal units.
also if you find something which is an off white or pink colour which starts to smoke drop it and run away. its whitephos and was used alot in ww2. it melts into human skin and the body with suitable evil results and doesnt stop burning untill its imersed totaly in water.

Re: Grenade in my garden, what to do?
Right - grenades rounded up, police on their way to check them out and check the garden out too to see if they need to call the bomb squad. So if I don't update for a while it's because I've been evacuated which is better than being blown up.
Thank you all for pushing me! (I honestly didn't realise how serious this was when I did my first post!).
Must say, I'm rethinking ever having a patio...

Then again, if they decide they need to do a proper search, they may do all the spade work for you!Susie wrote: Must say, I'm rethinking ever having a patio...

Blimey Guys! Good advice, got to feel for Susie.
I want to make a joke about something really serious happening in my life, and choosing to ask you lot what I should do, rather than actually taking a more "formal" or "traditional" route with said problem, but I fear it may be considered rude, which is not what I intend, just rather that it is kinda funny to ask a load of "ishers" what do do with Ordanance purely because it was found in the garden! ..EDIT.... ok I'll leave it.
Hope it works out ok.

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

We may have to do a controlled explosion. Will I have to type those terrible words, 'MKG was right?'

I can't think of a more sensible bunch of people on the interweb to ask anything of. Have you seen some of the forums out there? Ask the time and they try to set fire to youboboff wrote:Blimey Guys! Good advice, got to feel for Susie.

Re: Grenade in my garden, what to do?
All well! Grenades were dummies used for training, but I was doorstepped by local rag which was alarming. Bomb squad has assessed things and everything ok.
I have learned that the next time I find grenades, bombs, dead bodies or suitcases containing large amounts of money in used notes in the garden it is probably best to ring the police rather than letting anyone take it away in a wheelbarrow and then arguing the toss on the internet. Also that gardening is indeed very scary and that I don't have the sense I was born with.
