Or get a clean pint glass (the 'vase' type), give him a cold drink, then let it dry after he's held it. When it has come back to room temperature, dust it very lightly with talc...you should be able to measure his palm print.

Or when shaking his hand put your fingers around his hand then keep them that far apart all visit, then when you get home measure this distance.
I have tried this when cutting wood though, and it never seems to work!

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

Out of curiosity I decided to measure mine too. 3 1/2" , I'm 5'4" and I think perhaps I'm a man after all!

Oh and Susie, I have hands like shovels and have to wear men's gloves so I measured mine and they are just over 3 1/2 inches!

I don't have kids but, you know, I never realised their potential for secret hand measuring ;-). Also I don't live near dad so I can't just drop in, I have to visit for a couple of days, so he might find it a bit worrying if I just turn up out of the blue and dust talc on glasses
although he is quite an innocent soul and often his mind is on other things. I am going up there tomorrow actually so I shall be observing his hands carefully, I have now finished one mitten and it is wide but not ridiculously long so I think we may be ok.
I am a bit jealous of those of you with hands like shovels actually. Mine are thin and strange and there is not as much working area for lifting things about!

I put the mitten on flickr so you can see it: mitten front and mitten back. I've got about 3 more rows on the thumb to go.
It's a gnome. It will look non-lumpy and professional when I've blocked it! (Honest
