Saw this in the paper
I was reading my mum's newspaper today (the Mirror) and saw this... if you're going to use a template to layout the pages of a national newspaper, FFS check it before you send it to print.

I don't think they have proofreaders on papers any more, bought a paper the other day and stopped counting after 20 errors.

No, it's correct. It's a David Beckham quote.

Re: Saw this in the paper
they don't have proofreaders any more, but the page layout people check eachother's work (well, on the local paper round here they do!), they lay out a page, then send it to another member of staff who checks it over and then sends it on to print.... so if the mirror uses this system, two people F*d up, OR two people are leaving soon and CBA lol.

Re: Saw this in the paper
Sometimes it can't be helped even with a proofreader. If it is checked, it might have been the second guy did spot it but it was up to the first guy (or a third one) to alter it and that person hasn't. As annoying as it is, I know they're on a tight schedule so mistakes are going to happen. Having said that, a simple spell check on the computer should pick up on most of the ones that are in papers these days, but the spell check function seems to have made a lot of folk lazy.
I got sent a load of stuff to proofread and my boss hadn't given me a deadline, I sent it back a week later and he'd sent it to print the day before. Another time my friend was reading his copy of the magazine and started taking the pee because I'd missed a huge error - having checked my emails to the boss, I had found it, it just hadn't been corrected.
One of the books I proofread, I also edited. Whilst they took note of my edits, they didn't go back for the rest of it. I have a copy of it with my name in the front which would be awesome if the spelling and grammatical errors I'd picked up on had been changed. Scrap that, it's still awesome and I'm super proud that I'm a part of the team, it's just frustrating.

Yes, it does.
Re: Saw this in the paper
even more annoying sometimes, is incorrect translation, by someone who simply didnt have sufficient knowledge of the source language!
Re: Saw this in the paper
Just an interesting thought ... why is David Beckham the only one of the two to be sporting a Windsor knot in his tie?
