Does anyone know if the HMRC have time limits that they have to achieve or you don't have to pay money to them?

We were overpaid tax credits and they want it back, bummer i know but I appealed in July last year and only now got a response over 6 months later.

They still want most of it back but I'm thinking that if they have to make decisions within 6 months then they have missed their deadline.

I can't find anything on the net so thought I'd ask you good peeps.

BA - don't mess with the taxman, he always wins. They can go back many years and have powers way beyond any other gvmnt dept. Think Al Capone!

I've set up a payment plan to return the money to them........23 years it will take, lol.

He doesn't always win, in general it's 6 yrs.You've played it well,plead poverty, and offer to pay back,the people on the end of the phone are just like you and me and don't have a personal grudge they just want to clear their desk,give abit,take a lot. Best Wishes.

Was it their cockup?
I have heard that they have made so many that they are writing most of them off. And they blame their computer systems.
