It's official - selling your eggs is legal! (in UK)

Just thought I would share, as I know this subject has been a great cause for consternation on this forum - we had the environmental health and then trading standards people over today to talk about selling our pork.

while they were here I asked whether it was OK to sell our hens eggs at the gate - and they said this is absolutely fine. On such a small scale (i.e we have 10 hens) they are not at all worried - and there is no need to date stamp or label them in any particular way.

when they say no need to label .... you cant actually put "large" or "small" or whatever, if your not registered to sell or date stamp, under the defra/food guidelines.

its fine to sell to friends/family/via a sign at the gate

the guidelines are actually quite clear (what a refreshing change ;) )

Not quite, it's absolutely ok to sell to anyone at the gate.end of.If you turn over more than 2500 birds a year it's a bit more complicated!The pork's quite easy too,Bonnie PM me.

Good I always thought it was as I buy as many as possible from 'the gate' - reminds me I must pass my used boxes on to a lady who sells hers at the gate but crows steal them if they're in a tray

i know you cannot wash the eggs, or sort them by size, or provide second hand boxes - but people can bring their own second hand boxes and you can fill them...

its there on the defra site if you dig deep enough...

Of course you should never,ever, wash the eggs,for obvious hygiene reasons.(Should you need to wash pheasant eggs,or other egss of a similar size,(but obviously never,ever hen eggs)egg washing machines are readily available,or use cold water and a damp cloth.

any grubby eggs we get we wipe with a damp cloth, dry and use for ourselves.

we laugh that we get the broken, or grubby or little, doubles and mishapen ones, the perfect ones are sold

but really - i would hate hate hate to sell someone a less than perfect egg, so dont take any chances
