Post: # 222002Post homegrown »

has anyone had any experience with these, I am thinking about starting one here and would welcome ideas, I know they do large ones in spain and I have seen HFW doing a stall at his spring fair on the telly but could use more advice.

Cheers richard

Sorry to be clueless - what is a barter market? I think I know but I've never actually come across the term before.

A barter market is where people bring goods rather than money and trade them for other goods, the river cottage version is based around food products but the big markets in spain go beyond this and include clothing and many other things. It is caller an alternative currency and is suppose to be essential for transitioning towns and villages to a slower more sustainable way of life. it also helps in lower economic areas where there is little money available.

I hope to set up aself-sufficientish barter market where people can trade not only produce but also recycled and home built items as well, but I am sure I will have a lot of government red tape to get through in the process.

Tax is an issue you will have. The most famous UK barter market was............Saturday Swap Shop with Noel Edmonds
No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery

Here in NZ they tend to be called swap-meets and be thematically oriented. If it is an 'event' and you pay a door fee (even if nominal) i believe you dont have to worry about the tax, but im not a lawyer.

They used to be quite common but i havent seen one in ages!

Some friends held "a grand give and get day" in Brixton last summer and it was a roaring success and because there is no cash involved you eliminate VAT and income tax.
