temp census jobs in UK

Post: # 219652Post Rosendula »

I know some of you are on the lookout for ways to bring in a bit of extra money, so I thought I'd remind you it's Census year in the UK, and there are temporary jobs all over the country, closing dates around 17th January 2011.

It sounds nice and simple - drop the form off, pick it up again, but I have to say that a friend of mine did this job for the last census and she found it really stressful. People were reluctant to fill the forms in, or they were never at home when she went to collect them, or they wouldn't answer the door because they thought she was selling, or they didn't speak a word of English. But don't let me put you off - I just wanted to say it might not be as easy as it sounds on the surface.

I applied (and was offered) a supervisory job this time but I eventually turned it down once I realised I could take no leave AT ALL in the period of three months (leave entitlement is added on at the end of the period), the pay was at the very bottom of the scale they offered, I would have 15 "staff"and their problems to deal with basically from my own home, I had to drive a far distance to my designated "patch"without reimbursement and I would need quite a large storage place for all the boxes of paperwork. Also I needed to be spending a lot of time making reports and so on and dealing with phone calls which appeared to be going to take over not only my life but my family's life too.

I'm not saying the job wouldn't be useful addition to the budget but it seems you might have to anticipate a lot of hassle, disruption and out of hours working for not much above minimum wage.
Growing old is much better then the alternative!
