Hello there ,
since june last i am involved in building a coal fueled power plant , as they say co2 neutral , the co2 will be stored in empty gas fields .
In the Netherlands and the uk the envoirment activists are preparing to stop the coal powered plants , Why ?
anyone explain ?
To my idea they willl not pollute the air , or am I wrong ?
Reactions please ,
regards ,
Paul

Re: coal powered plant
There's also the problem of storing CO2.
My understanding is that storing it in old gas and coalfields is only a theory - if it proves to be wrong and leaks out many could die. CO2 being much denser than air will sit in a layer many metres deep at ground level - suffocating everything.

Has anyone researched the effect it might have on the naturally occurring methane in coal mines ?Green Aura wrote:My understanding is that storing it in old gas and coalfields is only a theory
If you pump carbon dioxide into old mines then methane being lighter would be forced to the top and into the atmosphere.
Methane I seem to remember is one of the worst greenhouse gasses.

There was a programme on Radio 4 a few months ago about a place in the States where they're planning to use this method of storing CO2 for the first time anywhere - it was absolutely terrifying. It's impossible to do a sufficiently accurate geological survey to make sure there are no fissures etc giving the gas access to the open. If there are they said it would wipe out the entire population, animal life and vegetation for (possibly) miles around.

Re: coal powered plant
storing waste is not a form of waste neutrality. The so called "clean coal" is a myth and a dirty way to try to sell something dirty as being something clean.
