All my puters are doing the same sort of thing, but it's for SETI
Same system, same BOINC program and same team work ... my team is Amsat which builds and launches amateur radio satellites.
There are many other programs worth doing if you leave your computer switched on all day.
There is a list here .... http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php

Nice idea. I almost signed up for it a year or so ago - until I saw the "computer on all day" requirement. That made up my mind - it's a no, I'm afraid.

Basically you let your computer work on bits of thingies and everyone is happy......
The way I believe it works is that it would take a scientist a lot of years to find a cure for say denge fever in a laboritory. This time is reduced if he uses a computer to work through the possible variations of drugs etc. If all the computers in the world join together and each one works on a seperate packet of infomation from the berkley site then this world wide super computer speeds up this process even further.
At least that's how I understand it.
As for the computer on all day, I don't do that but the programme works on mine in the background but it does have a good processor etc.

Not necessary to leave your computer on all day Mike.MKG wrote:Nice idea. I almost signed up for it a year or so ago - until I saw the "computer on all day" requirement. That made up my mind - it's a no, I'm afraid.

The program works in two ways. If you have a fast dual (or quad) core processor then it will use half of your processor working in the background as OJ says, then if you leave your PC unattended for a while it will start up as a screen saver and use all your processing power, until you come back after making your cup of tea.
So if you have a fast PC and it's switched on for an hour or two per day, it can still do some useful work.

Re: If I mention...
Hmmm - obviously I misread something. I'll take another look at it, then.
