Unless she said this to you in a really off way, don't necessarily read it that she didn't want you round - she might genuinely have thought she was saving you trouble. Also her house might have been a complete tip or the cat might have just been sick on the rug or the children had repainted the living room with tippex or something, and you caught her at a bad time. Don't necessarily give up if you get on in other ways - some people just don't like being dropped in on at short notice, it's no reflection on you.

I can be a bit reserved (I don't think I'm standoffish, I try not to be) but people do manage to make friends with me. Sucker them in slowly, that's my advice, because that's what works on me. I would say slowly slowly catchy monkey but I'm worried it's a bit of a questionable saying, anyway that is what I mean, so please forgive any possible dodgy linguistic stereotyping.

I suppose it depends on the village, but I think village life is far from being the rosy picture that towny folks have. I come from a village where people do not like new faces. Most have been born and bread there for generations and they have a mistrust of people not born there... Then at the same time they spend their lives picking on each others, criticizing and gossiping about each other, something their parents, grand parents, great grand parents etc have done for yonks!! New people do come there anyway but I am not quite sure how they fit in, if they ever do.... I did leave because I just felt claustrophobic in the middle of it all. But now I am thinking of going back; not for the people, but for the life there which is much calmer, wilder... At least there I will have a proper garden.
Maybe you have to decide what is most important for you: the life style or the people. As others said, you probably have to give it time, there may even be people you have not talk to very much yet who are going to be your friends.

When I was 13 we moved from Nottinghamshire to Leicester...a whole 25 miles. I was picked on horribly for being 'posh' and no-one wanted to be friends with our family. My lovely English teacher told me 'There's a reason that Leicester is spelt with ICE in the middle' So she taught me to spell the city's name as well as not to take the name calling too personally!

It's still true, so we are leaving. Ask either of our daughters, one of whom lived here from when she was 3 months old and the other who was born here: if your face doesn't fit you can be ostracised anywhere and rarely is that your fault.

Just remeber you have all of us here on ISH :grouphug:
