Oh no, SNOW !

Post: # 215900Post Odsox »

Sorry to all you peoples with significant snowfall and record low temperatures ... but, down here where it never ever snows, where it doesn't even freeze very often, we woke up to two whole inches of powdery snow this morning.
Mind you, the kids love it ... first time in their lives they have seen real snow.

We're sitting at an accumulation of about 30cm now :) car's not been down the drive for 4 days. I'm happy I can work from home so long as the electricity stays on. I don't think I can do pics cos I don't do the whole pics on the internet thing! suffice to say it's beautiful :)

We are lucky too as Dave works from home and it's lovely being all cosy and warm in the house. We're trying to keep the poor birds fed and watered so Dave goes out to move the frozen water from the bird baths every so often.........coat and wellies next to the back door in readyness. Love the photo, kids defo having great fun!

Just been out for a walk in the snow with the dog, 10cm accumulated while we were out in the hour and we have a metre forecast by the weekend. Love the snow, just hate having to drive out in it to get to work.

Sunshine, rain, wind and fog are more to be expected in west Cork and if you're unlucky they happen on the same day!
Do you know the last time there was snow all the way down to the far bottom left corner of Ireland?

We had a brief covering of very wet snow about 5 years ago that lasted about an hour.
Other than that there has been no snow since we moved here 15 years ago.

PLUS ... I hope it's another 15 years or more before it happens again.

Bugger.... and to think, we chose Galway........ we have around a foot here - and because the woods are around the garden, our snow isn't melting in the sun, not like the snow in the field opposite which has cleared!!

I went to the village yesterday, but the roads haven't been gritted, so the curves, bends & the rises are interesting!

Ah well..... I have milk, flour, coffee, plenty of roosters & veg in the garden, we'll be fine!!

I had to go out yesterday afternoon - first time I've left the village since the snow started, only to discover they've not gritted the road from Balnakeil to Durness. It's only a mile long but is very undulating - they managed to grit the last peak, about 50 feet, before you drop down to the village on the other side, which is currently like a ski run.

This seems to be a new policy, a neighbour mentioned they've been doing the same elsewhere too. They've always gritted the full road before, so it's either a grit or money saving exercise.

Having frozen again overnight I'm not risking it again today - so the cats will love it - I'm currently investigating the board for catfood recipes.

We''ll know when things get REALLY bad when you start investigating cat recipes.

It's been gloriously sunny every day since Monday, but still cold. Roads are clear and snow is mostly gone .. just a few pockets in shady spots. Cold enough to kill my tomatoes in the unheated polytunnel. :(
The kid's snowman has slimmed down considerably too.

Good job you didn't choose west Cork instead of Galway Julie, or you would have had me as a neighbour. :pale:

Keep warm.

Tony - would that be bad for you.... or for me??
I'd LOVE to have you as a neighbour - you could grow me some fat sweetcorn each year & I'd do you a freezer full of chooks in return!!
We're keeping warm ok - Andy's just been in the woods & returned with 2 wheelbarrows full of wood & a huge pile ready for splitting still to go at! We've had our eye on a couple of trees that have been down since we moved in - hidden in the darkness of the other trees around, we figure they would be seasoned enough... and even if they're not, it's free!

We've got feet and feet of it. Snow ploughs have cleared the roads up against the pavements. The pavements have been walked on so it's compacted, has thawed, frozen, been snowed on again and now the pavements are about a foot deep glaziers. Some of the bumps on the road edge are cars. And it's cold, verry cold indeed.

No post, no deliveries from the supermarkets, no deliveries to the local shops (or very few) so a lot of people are hunkered down with short shelves. The schools have been shut most of the week - two in town attempted to open and failed miserably. It's got to the state where even the teen orgres are staying in due to the chill factor. The buses are having troubles and the trains too.

It's been a long week and there's the threat of more here tomorrow. Would anyone like a few containers full of snow and some cold weather. Am willing to share. Generously.

Err, no thanks. Got rid of mine a couple of days ago.
It actually rained today and everything is muddy again, temperature hit 11C during the day but has dropped back to +6C as I type (about 8:30pm). I hope you get rid of yours soon but next week's forecast is not so good.

Julie, that sounds like a GREAT idea.
We have like minded friends who moved house back in the early summer to a house with a very unkempt acre or so.
Too late to plant anything much this year, so I grew extra and kept them in veg all summer and autumn. It was just a case of sowing twice as much, or in my case carrying on as normal cos I always grow twice as much as we can hope to eat.
