I opened a pack of rice, only to find rice weevils in it - alive! I'd never known of such a thing before, but this has happened twice now from the same supermarket. I've completely gone off rice now that I've read up on them I wonder how they manage to survive, because the shelf life is so long? It is definitely not from my cupboard because they were in it when I opened it! Has anyone else had this before?
I got some rice from T***o which had huge weevils in it. I got some from Asda a couple of weeks later which also had weevils - but nowhere near the size of the T***o lot.
Now I shop at Asda. It's the lesser of two weevils.
(MKG was last seen heading out to sea on a boat packed with other people also holding coats).
The secret of life is to aim below the head (With thanks to MMM)

Only after the last river has been poisoned,
Only after the last fish has been caught,
Only then will you realise that money cannot be eaten" Cree Indian prophecy

If you found them in the cupboard where you store your dried goods, such as flour etc, it's possible that they are psosids of book lice. They eat their way into your packets thru the glue so the can appear in un-opened packets of food. They usually come into your kitchen with the food as when food is stored in the warehouses bats poop on it and that's where to psosids come from
Sounds like the same things to me, but I'm not an expert on things that come out of bats bottoms.

Eek! More beasties to worry about! Luckily these are just rice weevils, they were straight out of the packet, straight out the bag from the shop so I know it's not me! Apparently the females drill a hole in the rice grain, lay an egg and the weevils then emerge from the rice! Aargh!
Eeeew oh no now I am going to start looking more closely at my rice, I still haven't got over the thought of the grubs in blackberries yet and certainly haven't started eating any of my curly kale because I just feel sick thinking about it due to the amount of caterpillars I had to squidge.

that would make sense, if rice in the UK were packages in paper bags. as it's packaged in heat-sealed plastic though, I'm not sure this can apply.

I used to buy rice in small cardboard boxes many years ago, and that's what I was thinking of. These days, on the rare occasion I buy it at all, I always buy it in pastic bags. Can you not get the boxes any more? I haven't seen any in ages.
Apparently if you put the rice in the freezer for a few hours it kills them, but who wants to eat rice with dead weevils in it?? I don't think I'll be eating rice for a while now and I'm not eating brambles either!

found this on wikipedia ...
People in rice-eating regions, for example, typically ingest significant numbers of rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae) larvae, and this has been suggested as an important source of vitamins.
