House move dilemma - LPG heating from red portable tanks!

I'm glad to have moved away from LPG - we used to have a big white tank in the garden. The main problem was trying to get them to deliver.. much stress. Somestimes they woulc come cos i said i was low - then empty their tanker into my neighbours tank (as they did eveyone at once) and give me nothing.. gah!!
we ran out christmas eve once.. did get some in time.. but it was unfunny.

I'd look at moving as much over to wood as you can. could you fit a wood burnign rayburn?

Red I was just looking at solid fuel Rayburns on ebay. The kitchen chimney has been closed off at some point and would need a bit of work to reopen. No undoable though. It's an option - and have an open fie in the living room for background heat/animals lying in front of

I am out at work all day, so I will need to see if you can keep it ticking over for 9 hours. I don't fancy coming home to a cold house and having to start raking out a fire and laying it ready to light and then waiting for a while to heat up. Hold on, is that not what everyone did 20 years ago......?

It was what I was doing 10 years ago. We had so many problems with the old gas boiler that for months at a time, the rayburn was the only form of heating or hot water. I used to come home from work (often far more than 9 hours) and have to get the rayburn going so I could have a shower the next day. It is do-able but I'll admit that I used to use coal. Just four lumps of coal on a fully shut down rayburn will keep it going all day, then throw a tissue on it and load it up with kindling, should get it up to temperature in about 20 mins.

Invest in excellent insulation for the hot water tank, double or triple the recommended amount. It will keep the water hot for a lot longer. If the OH was away and I was really frugal with the shower, I could make the hot water last from Sunday night through to Wednesday morning.

you mentioned that there was a redundent water pipe running from the fire to a hot water tank somewhere treat this with caution as i 'm sure i read somewhere that if you have a backboiler fitted to a solid fuel heat source an it isn't used it can go bang. something to do with expanding air and compressed gas physics dont want to scare just warn

Good point. The fire is not in use, so I would need to investigate further.
