Non-smokers look away now. Tips for existing smokers...

Post: # 175339Post southeast-isher »

Yes we know smoking is very bad for you sure but if you still want to smoke why not try a pipe. You're not inhaling into your lungs this way but you still get that nicotine but moreover it's jolly good fun! Is it bad for you still? Of course...

Jack Hargreaves, one of my idols, smoked a pipe:

As a non-smoker (sorry, I did look) I do find that pipe smoke is the lesser evil compared to cigarette smoke. I actually sort of quite like it, but that might be it reminds me of my granddad who smoked a pipe. Even when I was asthmatic it didn't bother my quite so much.

On the downside it does still make your clothes reek, and I once knew a guy who kept his pipe in a jacket pocket and it would smoulder on for hours giving off faint wisps of smoke while hanging on the back of the chair (in our non-smoking office). Which was odd because it seemed to require phenomenal attention from him to keep it going when he had it in his mouth.

As the wife of a pipe smoker, I can assure you pipe smokers do take the smoke into their lungs! It is slightly less likely to cause lung cancer as pipe tobacco contains slightly less carcinogens, but it causes mouth & throat cancer in far more people than ciggies.

The bit about it smouldering in the pocket but needing much attention in the mouth had me in fits!!!   I must show OH this post!

As a cigarette smoker I have to say that the smell of cloying pipe tobacco makes me feel physically sick, and I was really happy when they banned them from trains - cos I always got stuck next to someone smoking a pipe!

Pipe-smokers tend to inhale into lungs if were previously a cigarette smoker. You can find out if you do by seeing if you can exhale smoke through your nose. There is actually a point where if you smoke a few bowls of tobacco a day in a pipe you are actually more likely to live longer than a non-smoker.

If i could explain it i would, with gusto - maybe to some it is as relaxing akin to some sort of meditation. Well, that's my excuse and i'm sticking to it. And yes i was amazed with what can be done with statistics! Nevertheless that's what the article said - perhaps a little optimistic for some.
