i need a bit of advice... or a kick up the arse
ive been offered a job, doing bar work at this years v festival. when i saw it i was all happy and wow, im ganna work v fest! etcetc
i went to the interview and whatever. had an email today with further details with shift times and meeting places etc, but i have to confirm whether i want it on monday 17th
its £5 an hour, which is slightly more than minimum wage and im not sure if ill be taxed on it or not. I might work friday & saturday, or saturday & sunday, or all 3 days, i dont know until i phone on monday.
the shifts are
friday 11.30am - 2am & 6pm - 2am
saturday 10.30am - 11pm/midnight & 5.30pm - 2am
sunday 10.30am - 11pm/midnight & 5.30pm - midnight
and id get one or two half hour, unpaid breaks per shift
its weekend camping in a staff area, with only slightly better facilities than the public.. but tbf im not fussed about peeing behind a bush =]
we've gatta take our own food cause we dont get much offered (a packed lunch and a hot meal on the night OR vouchers for food vans)
also, getting there is ganna be a bitch. im going to have to get to wolves (and i cant stay at my blokes cause he wont be there) with all my stuff, and then get on a shuttle bus which is £8 return i think, and then find my way to the staff bit. failing that, i could carshare with a stranger...
basically.... i cant decide if i want to go for it.. purely for the experience of doing it, and getting over my fear of getting off my arse and doing something, and new people and new places etc
i dont know if its worth it? i dont know anyone thats doin it, so ill be a loner all weekend.. im not too great making friends
what would you lot do?

Re: i need a bit of advice... or a kick up the arse
My two cents is if you think it's going to be a pain and you have an apprehension about new places and things, you should go. I often find that when I make myself go/do something that makes me nervous or that I think I won't enjoy, I end up having the best time or getting the most out of it. I guess it has something to do with just surrending to the event/moment for whatever it is or will be and putting all your apprehension aside. It usually turns out to be a rewarding experience. And, another thing, don't make the decision based on money; that's a lousey way to think on things. Another thing is to ask yourself, if you say no this time, will you be asked again. If the answer is no, then you should probably do it.
Sorry my response is long, but I hope I have helped.

go for it!!!
Do I take it youve not been working this year?? you only get taxed if you've earnt over about £4000 since April.
Like you say, it's an experience. You never know who you'd bump into!

Go for it. You will have a great time and it will be a great experience. Sounds like you will be working a lot. When you are not working you will be sleeping or catching a band or two so probably won't get that lonely. Go and explore. Like all of these things it's the thought of doing it that puts the doubt in your mind, when you do it you wonder why you worried in the first place. I have worked at Glastonbury every year since 1991 and its a fantastic experience. If you don't do these things whilst you are young (I'm presuming you are) you will only regret it when you are older. So get off your arse and don't turn into a boring old fart.
No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery

Re: i need a bit of advice... or a kick up the arse
You'll love it!
The very first thing I did on my own after I separated was to go to a music festival for a weekend entirely alone with a tiny tent. I knew no one there but had a good time, made various friends, listened to a lot of music and relaxed. I volunteered to be a steward at the following year's festival and then spent several years doing festivals as a steward more or less every other weekend - a smallish amount of work for a great weekend´s entertainment and company.
Even if you ARE taxed just save your P45 (and find the one from the other job you did). You will be able to claim the tax back if you approach your local tax office for a form.

If you are over 20, I'm sure the minimum wage is more than £5 - better check that out! You don't want to be taken for a ride...Derry wrote: goodearth - im a 20-something o.a.p ;) haha

You'll regret it if you don't do it. So get off your ar$e and tell them NOW that you want the job. Get the shuttle so that you meet some people on the way. They'll be dead impressed that you are staff.
Have a great time

Re: i need a bit of advice... or a kick up the arse
As a fellow 20-something OAP, I'd like to add to the voices that say gopher it!
I'm not good at making friends either, but I would say that if you prepare a handful of questions in your head that you can ask anyone, it will help. Once you've asked a question try to follow up their response with another question, if they haven't given you anything to go on, just move on to the next pre-prepared question. Then you look interested, which always puts people at ease, and you'll be making arrangements to meet up to see a certain band before you know it!
But most of all - enjoy it!
