Firewood prices

Hello there ,

Just wondering what the prices of firewood do in the UK .
Here in Germany they are around 65 tot 114 € for a qubic meter .Or 55 to 95 sterling in you are unlucky .
What are the going prices in the UK?

Because we're trying to be self sufficient we use around 12m3 of wood a year ,since we've been doing this
it semms that the prices of firewood have gone through the roof ,my neighbours tell me that it used to cost
lee than half these prices.

Of course to keep in the rat race and to keep up with the jones's the suppliers of firewood link their prices
probably to the oil price .
Even from the Baltic states and Russia the prices they qoute are the same as local wood .

So what's the score in the UK ?

We're planning to plant Ash this autumn and be a little bit more self sufficient in the future .

About the same, maybe with a higher limit. If you buy it in the height of summer you CAN get it as low £40.

I can get a back of a transit flat bed load for £60, and get a good amount for that price

I now forage for wood more often than I used to, I have a van so I will stop if I see a nice piece and load it into that back, I don't have enough land to plant some for firewood but trimings from the trees around here help keep the pile high and the price lower.

Good idea on planting ash, I was at my uncles place and was chopping piles of ash and sycamore for drying

In my local area I'm known as skippy or the womble.... for obvious reasons but scavenging for wood is a passtime. Neighbours often come knocking on the door saying things like " I'm getting this job done, do you need any of the ?? [ bricks, soil, wood etc] before I order the skip ?

It saves them money on the number of skips they hire and saves me money on things "that will come in handy one day"

Bought firewood is around £30 a M3 up here delivered but it's worth cultivating a few tree surgeons as these are happy to have a ready market to dump their wood rather than store it for the future.

We've just paid €165 for a corde which is 3 square metres of well seasoned chestnut, and it would have been €175 but we ordered 6 cordes. Oak is quite a lot more expensive. Unfortunately I live in one of the most expensive parts of France for firewood. Even more unfortunate our firewood man is giving up the business as it doesn't pay so we'll have to find someone else, and finding anyone to deliver is hard.

I'm currently paying £60 per 1.1m2 of seasoned hardwood logs, last year it was £50, and the year before it was £40.

It is linked to the oil price... because absolutely everyone is installing wood burning stoves to try and cut down on using oil and gas (me included!) Therefore wood is much harder to get , and therefore the price goes up...good example of supply and demand.

we don't have a wood burner, but I do have a firepit in the garden. I tend to go round at this time of year after the council have been lopping branches off the trees and pick up all the branches they leave. sort of gleaning I suppose.
