Onion/garlic smell on hands.
I have seen these stainless steel thingies in various
kitchen gadget shops which, when wetted and rubbed
on your hands, remove onion and garlic smells after you
have been cooking.
I was doing my dishes last night and my hands were smelling
of onions when I looked at my stainless steel cutlery and had
an idea!
I rubbed the handle of one of my SS knives on my hand after rinsing
it under the tap and it works!! Onion smell gone! So, don't need to
spend money on a gadget when I can simply use my cutlery!
I probably wouldn't have bought the 'smell remover' anyway, but it shows
that sometimes you already have these things in the house without realising
it!

Interesting though, I will have to try that as oniony smelling hands are not that pleasant hours after you've eaten the culprits.

Dear Grannymags,
Onion/garlic odours can be washed off your hands with a little lemon juice rubbed into the skin and then rinsed off. Works for me anyway, and I've just spent part of the morning harvesting a years supply of garlic from the raised beds,

A spoon would be safer than a knife , of course, but I had never
though of the draining board!
Brilliant! Thanks!

I just wonder - what is it in stainless steel that makes the odour disappear? SOme weird and wonderful chemical reaction?
They didn't teach us that at school...

I always get a mound of salt and some olive oil and rub it all over my hands (taking off rings first) then run it under warm NOT hot water and dab off on a towel... smell is always gone!
Whatever you do don't run your hands under hot water when you have cut onions, it 'sets' the smell into your skin!

Re: Onion/garlic smell on hands.
All good tips.
I never worry about the smell of garlic on my hands!
My tip is to keep a bit of used lemon by the sink and to stick your fingernails into it and have a good old squidge, leave for 30 secs or so then rinse - this will help to lighten up fingernails and fingers which have been stained from gardening.

I use stainless steel Spong mincer blades (most are mild steel but I found one in a charity shop recently which had stainless ones). they're not sharp, they're circular and therefore easier to handle than table knives (which is what I used to use before.

I used a stainless steel spoon just now and it works perfectly. Much more comfortable to use than the knife handle.
