Where do you get the borax from? And what it is in the mix for?

I have made gloop just with the leftovers of bars of soap - collected them at work, too. Just break up and add boiling water (what's left in the kettle after making a cuppa). The soap disintegrates slowly, going more and more gloopy - it needs adding water several times, and a bit of a stir.

I bought my borax from the local hardwear store - but I believe that they now only have borax substitute. I'm not sure why it in there - but it seems to work very well!

It works really well in the washing machine. I have one of those ball dispensers and I put it in there.

There's something environmentally unfriendly about borax I believe - new declaration by the powers that be. I use washing soda crystals in the washing machine (oh and for clearing a lot of other things) as do other members of the family. These can be found in most of the supermarkets at no great cost.

I'm just wondering whether the borax really needs to be in there - as I have used my version of "soap-only" gloop quite successfully in the washing machine, too!

The soap recipee sounds really intersting and I fancy giving it a try. Just a few questions. Where do you get Borax and what is Washing soda?
Thanks

Repels cockroaches! I wouldn't need it for my water which is very soft.

Borax is a mineral salt. I buy it at the grocery store, usually on the shelf with all the other whiteners and brighteners they try to sell you these days.

I'm using liquid in my machine too and find everything is cleaner since Rick left home and the washer isn't getting overstuffed

I am going to be making up a bunch of cleansers shortly, when all my Food Bank surplus has run out.

Too hot here to make soap or soup today. 110'F in the noon sun and 90'F in the shade.

Too hot to garden too. But the garden is a great savings at the grocery store if you plant things that can be bottled or frozen for winter.

When we finish clearing out I'm going to take my van off the road for a while, save some $$ there as it needs repairs and 3 months ins. payments will fix the front end, and 8 payments will get the new cylinder head (bad valve)

Remember too, think of others as well as yourselves. Share what you can, it will come back 10 fold if you give to the right people.

 :hugish:

Thanks. Seems to improve on the cleaning action through softening the water. Well, that is very soft here anyway, so I can probably do without it. (Don't have cockroaches - yet! - and I can do without the disinfection, too...)

No problem with my septic tank. And it's seen everything from vinegar to the top of the toothpaste tube!

It is HOT here again. If anyone wants to know what I look like think a fence post with arms and legs wearing shorts and a tube top, looks ridiculous but I'm comfortable.
