yes. 7 day shifts so for 7 days he commutes there and back, then has 7 off, then for 7 nights he does the same thing. he takes the car because it cuts about 2 hours off his total journey.

when i do london trips i am a train person because i don't drive.

the trip ws a bit of a bust really, soph was a bit ill the night before so we missed the party, but by the time she had perked up we were still in time to hop on a train and go meet james from work. good journey, no panics, even got to use a staff lavvie at tower hill because sophie needed a wee and the staff took pity on her 'cos she's tiny.

Probably not so bad doing the nightshift and travelling by car then, and having 7 days to recover from 7 days of commuting and working is a lot better than getting 2 days off for every 5!!! How did he wangle such a cushy number or does he work incredibly long shifts to make it in line with the average 35 (or whatever it is these days) hour week?

10-12 hour shifts for 7 days depending on what duties he's doing. 10 hours standard, 12 if he's team leader.

horrific hours, but it's good pay and he likes the work most of the time. he's an engineer, he maintains great western's rolling stock.

The main thing is that he enjoys the job! And those awful long hours aren't so bad when you get 7 days off at the end of it to recover. Good luck to him.

These strange shift patterns seem to becoming more common these days. My neighbour works something like 4 days then 3 nights then gets 5 days off. It means he can have a holiday without eating into his annual leave allowance. It also means you get weekdays off which can be really useful but you do have to work some weekends.

Personally I think it is ridiculous doing one week nights/evenings then one week early mornings. My brother has to do this and has huge difficulties sleeping. If he could just stick to one shift permanently (day or evening) or at least a month at one and a month at the other it might be better. How can they expect max production out of their staff when they are knackered because they cannot get their sleep patterns sorted when they keep changing every week.
