Moving on Sat!!! Need Furniture!

Post: # 160115Post Loobyloo »

(well hopefully, if all the checks go through ok, as we're both unemployed its not certain!)

As the place we're moving into is a largish 3 bed cottage and we sold all our stuff to go Wwooffing we were wondering if anyone in the somerset/ dorset area had any furniture they need shot of?
I've been onto freecycle but there's nothing much about at the mo so I thought I'd try you lovely people. We have literally nothing, no fridge, freezer, washing machine, couch, bed etc etc so if anyone has anything they no longer need pleasepleaseplease pm me. We can collect!

Love and good vibes to all!!!

She's tried, Flo. Sorry Looby, can't help but I wish you all the best with your move. Maybe you can try Freecycle in the area you are moving to as well? Or maybe that's where you already tried, it would make more sense anyway.

Is this house unfurnished because that's unusual for England, or has unfurnished become more common these days? When I rented there was always other people's horrible furniture there.

Thanks for the best wishes MMM, have just spoken to the letting agents and its all go for tomorrow morning!! Yay! Am finally allowing myself to get excited!

Its the local freecycle to where we're moving that we've been looking on, will have to keep trying.

And we saw over 12 properties in the west country and they were without fail unfurnished, a very few had white goods but most didn't and couple even didn't have ovens or hobs!!!

Maybe it was a bit different in London? Who knows.

Anyway when we moved into our first rented house in France we needed furniture! We used our white plastic garden table and chairs in the living room for a while and we did luckily have a bed and bits and bobs like coffee tables and book shelves. All the white goods were provided although when they broke down we ended up replacing them with out own.

If you can even get hold of some manky garden furniture or even a crappy old mattress to use as a sofa it's a start.

Hope you love your new home, Loobyloo. If you can't get anything for free, I find the YMCA have some really good furniture shops with great stuff at very low prices.

Mandy, I think most houses nowadays in the UK are rented unfurnished. I know several people who rent houses and I have, too, in the past and all of them were unfurnished. I think it may be different if you are renting bed-sits or studio flats.

Cheers
Zoe

Loobyloo, I wish you all the very best in your new home.

As a stopgap, try T€$co's camping range...inflateable mattresses dirt cheap, also £8.97 for a pair of chairs http://direct.T***o.com/q/R.901-1438.aspx

MMM a lot of landlords ditched the funiture when the new fire regs came in...guess which three little words sum up that bit of non-sense? Health & Safety!

Ah that's why then - well it makes sense and it's much nicer having your own furniture! You know where it's been!

There still seem a lot around here that are furnished - awful! How can anybody want to live in somebody else's furniture, preference of wall colour, etc? And then they charge your for it (which is why rents are so terribly high in UK), and don't allow pets (because they might damage those wonderful suites...)! I'd rather live in my own orange crates than in somebody's stuff...

i lived for years in a part-furnished rented house, it meant that you still had to buy your own but also store the landlords crap leftovers

That was partly my problem this last winter - couldn't find anything affordable that wasn't furnished, didn't want to sell my own furniture (which was in storage), so if I'd moved into anything furnished I not only would have had to pay rent for the furniture, but also storage for my own stuff... Plus, I really resent having to use white goods that I didn't chose myself: landlords will put in what's cheap - not what's efficient in usage! So you pay even more in electricity.

Thanks for all the advice and good wishes folks, much appreciated!

Well we're in! I'm slowly working out the rayburn and we're getting bits and pices of furniture as and when we can from ebay. We're still fridgeless which actually isn't the end of the world, what's most annoying is the lack of comfy seating! we're using camping chairs at the moment!!

Thankfully OH has just got himself a job and I've got two interviews lined up for next week. Once the money starts coming in we'll be able to ge more stuff!

And its lovely being in the country, so peaceful! i can't wait til I can start work on the garden (unfortunately the house takes priority at the mo) I've got grand plans for raised beds, chickens, compost heaps etc etc etc!!

we live in a "part furnished" which means 3 crappy units belonging to the landlord. no white goods, not even the cooker we were told was going to be here.

thankfully we had our own furniture but had to use a campig stove for a week.

Looby, have you tried the terracotta pot-in-pot method of refridgeration? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pot-in-pot_refrigerator massive plant pots and sand.
