wwoof-ish
wwoof-ish
Just floating this idea and seeing if I have any takers before I think about it more seriously.
We are about to start demolishing the back of our house to make way for our new extension (planning permission is through and we are looking at builders last week and this)
We are looking at starting to take apart the rear of the house ourselves as best we can before paying a team of labourers (we got a quote of £60 an hour for 3 workmen) to do it for us.
We have a mini-holding (around a third of an acre) with chickens, a PT and a large veg patch all in production, we heat by woodburner (all woodwaste from the build will be burnt as we go) I also have a toddler.
So, if anyone fancies a volunteering camping/b+b holiday (we would provide meals) in rural Lanarkshire by way of giving us a hand removing a patio, plasterboard, slates, etc, etc. We'd gladly accommodate a small family if that suits and we wouldn't expect you to help everyday. We are near New Lanark heritage village and 25mins from Glasgow (by car) We are on just a mile from the M74.
Any dates in July would suit us, pretty much.
Any thoughts or offers greatly appreciated.

Great idea Ann, we'd have been there with bells on if everything hadn't gone t*ts up for us. Unfortunately we'll just be moving into our new house around then and desperately job hunting.
Good luck with it all though and if you need any help with anything else in future let me know!

Well the build work is likely to go on for a few years, so why don't you drop me a note when you feel you would be able to join us... being very 'ish' orientated we aren't a proper small holding or anything but there is always something to be done here.

If I'm still without a job the second half of July, I'll pop down and give you a hand for a few days... Remind me again - I've already committed myself to house- and animal sitting before then!

Will definitely do that Ann! Would love to come and see you.

Re: wwoof-ish
Hmmm, this was exactly what I was looking for a few weeks ago, until I hatched the bike trip idea...
I could be there... around the 11th of August, if thats any help, and stay for a coupla days. I have a medium amount of domestic demolition work experience.
However I would need to see about transport. I would probably leave my bike in London, so train and bus... depending on costs.
ouch, 49 pounds one way by train...
Edit for sake of not making thread too long:
Yes the problem is I have no transport that I can control myself that goes over 10 miles/hour on average, so I think the cost of getting up there would probably be outweighed by experienced labourers. Sorry

As I ping from tree to tree I wonder... why do I seem to have transformed into a pinging tree-dwelling thing?
Re: wwoof-ish
Yeah, we are quite a distance from London Town
but if you fancied taking route 74 up north we are just off that (or rather just off the proposed continuation of route 74. Medium amount of experience in domestic demolition sound just up our street too
Oh well.
Ina, you know you are always welcome here

Annpan - have you tried HelpX? It's like wwoofing but not necessarily limited to farming and your profile is free.
Good luck, IME (as a wwoof host), you'll get a lot of unexperienced people offer - make sure you sort the wheat from the chaff, a lot of them will be kids who say they are "hardworking" but don't really know what the word means, on the flip side if they're young they might just have a ton of energy!
