With the size you have in mind could you get hold of some old wooden pallets, treat them with a stainer/preservative and attach them to some fence posts along the length of the gap? They look as good as most flimsy fences and are amazingly substantial.
Growing old is much better then the alternative!

We just used an old bed- the wooden slstted sort -to make a fence today. Just got to stain it. Might you find one in a skip? :sunny:

I've seen someone take all the planks off pallets and make a very smart fence. He was only a young lad, too. I was very impressed. But if you don't want to go to the hassle I think just standing the pallets on their edge and knocking some fence posts down between what was the top and the bottom, and at either end of each one, that would do the job. But then you'd have to buy fence posts....

I do often see adverts for fences on Freecycle. I think quite a few people take them down to build brick walls instead :dontknow:

my local freecycle is terrible.

right, the plan is: if we can get some, pallets. if we can't, reed-fencing. nice and cheap, nice and idiot proof.

Reed fencing is pretty good. We have some at the end of our garden from when we wanted to give us privacy from some annoying people who used to live there. They had a tall fence, but it was wooden palings and their kids could see through and were always having a go at my kids. When it came to putting it up, we realised that their fence posts were rotten at the bottom, so we didn't want to fasten it onto the back of that - thought it might all fall down. So we bought some posts, and met-posts (the metal spike things that you hammer into the ground and then put the wooden post in the top of that. Makes it easier to erect, and stops the post rotting. Problem is, they're expensive.) Anyway, our fence has survived all sorts of weather - huge winds, floods, everything. Their fence is falling down.

One thing I will say, if you don't want to be able to see them you will need a double layer of the stuff, but if it's just to keep them off a single layer will be OK.

Also, birds sometimes come and pinch bits for their nests, but that's just sweet. :sunny:
