Sorting out a severely burnt pan

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Sorting out a severely burnt pan

Post: # 147775Post MrsD'ville mkII »

Couldn't think where else to put this! I made a fabulous job of welding rice to a pan at the weekend. It's been soaked, boiled up with vinegar and bicarb and scraped, but it's still a work of art. Does anyone know what I can do to get the burnt crud off and rescue my pan?

Thank you

Let the pan dry out a bit, put a 2p coin on the bottom and push it about with your finger - got a pan of mine clean of year-old burned on Marmalade. Then do the soaking thing again and the rest should come off easier.

Worth a try

Make a thick paste of bicarb and water, spread it on the burned stuff, and let soak for a couple hours. It should just rinse off.

Thank you. I'll try the first then if that doesn't work the second and so on - I'll report back!

What sort of pan is it? If it's cast iron you can burn it off - put it on a high heat and leave it - doors and windows open until it's turned to carbon and comes loose.

Otherwise, if none of the other suggestions have worked, try some washing powder. Half fill with water and a handful of powder, bring to the boil and then leave overnight - lifts most things off.

Finally, despite my hatred of all things plastic, I always keep a stash of those silver plastic pan scrubbers - they look like a ball of silver plastic wool. They are amazing for getting all sorts of stuck on things off, and last for ages, so I don't feel too bad about using them - I'm sure there must be another use for them when they've gone past pan-scrubbing but I've not worked out what yet!

I'm with Green Aura on the advice of washing powder. This has enzymes in it which will help break down some of the stuff. So use it at the recommended heat (i.e. don't boil it if it's for 60 C), or you might inadvertently inactivate the enzymes.

Good luck,
Jandra

Brown sauce. Sounds stupid but leave it in the pan for a couple of days. It really does work.

Good lord, if brown sauce can shift that I dread to think what it does to my husband's insides lol! I haven't done it yet, isn't that shocking? However am now the owner of a 2p (it's taken me all week to get one!) so will give that a go first. Just as soon as I've finished getting ready for DD's birthday party tomorrow...

geez!, i'd wonder what brown sauce does to your insides as well if it can shift burnt on food

another good one is a dishwasher tablet if you've got one......cover the area with hot water pop in a tab and let it soak for a while, then scrub and repeat as necessary.

i'm currently living in as a nanny and my bosslady did this very same thing on fri night......bottom of the pan completely burnt with what should have been lovely tomato sauce( she insists on using an element to big for her pan, that wont turn down low enough....... ......i think your right about that rachel she said finally on fri night!!! doh!).
anyway, i told her to scrub as much off (she can clean up her own mess!!) cover the burnt areas with hot water and throw in a dishwash tab, let it soak, scrub and repeat as needed. i noticed yesterday morning that she had followed orders!!!! and the pan was clear and clean!.
