Does anyone know how to make clogs?

Post: # 2134Post gill_didsbury »

Hi Everyone,
I have searched the web on how to make clogs, I have come up with nothing. I have emailed various people in the UK who make clogs and they say its tooooooo hard to explain :-(

The clogs I would like to make are slip on clogs with leather on the front.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks
Gill

G'DAy Gill,

I have a description of clog making in a book - " The Complete Practical Book of Country Crafts - Jack Hill. I can photocopy and send to you if you are interested.

Hi

Clog making is a local industry here and the local musuem has open days where you can see a clog maker at work. Check out Colne valley musuem in Golcar near Huddersfield. You can also see them made about 12 miles from here at Walkleys http://www.chromavision.co.uk/walkleyclogs/index.htm

You need Alder wood for the soles, and if you are in the area ever, I have 3 acres of alder! Beech is a newer alternative. The rough shape of the soles is made using a clogger's knife, a long blade fixed to a large block of wood, which gives it incredible leverage to cut the shape. If you are interested, contact us and maybe come up some time?

I believe Shire Publication had a booklet on clog making, but can't find it in their list, could be out of print.
Here the website, they may still be able to help, and if you are patient, you may find the title somewhere in the long list, though its not under clogs or wooden shoes.
http://www.shirebooks.co.uk/
The booklets are quite cheap.
Greetings from Judy of the Woods

It was called Clogs and Clogmaking by Shire, and there seems to be two copies on the internet.

actually I have had a thought if anyone wants a book try asking the eco logic people, paeter (the owner) has said to me in the past that he would get me books that I want. If it is printed by a really unethical publisher he won't stock it, but in genral he has lots of books for people that are into the sort of stuff we all are. Tell him I sent you so we can get a few pence to keep the site going too. Ta :andy:
