Forums are about anonymity hence our nicknames. Facebook/G+ etc are about being yourself/real name. I wouldn't have me as an avatar here but I do have a cartoonised avatar of me on my blog (and some real photos of me!).

What a bizarre question to ask. I do have a photo, but I don't look down or be suspicious of those who don't. What next, full address and phone number?

People choose avatars that represent them, or mean something to them. To basically accuse people you don't know of having something to hide is rather judgemental, no?

I'm rubbish at hiding. I have a name I made up for using on internet forums so I could stay anonymous, but anyone who matters to me in real life knows it, and anyone who matters to me on the 'net knows my real name. I suspect a few people who don't matter much to me also know them both. I recently completely befuddled myself by creating a pseudonym for my pseudonym! Talk about brain-ache.

I'm the same as you. At the end of the day, those I know and trust know who I am in 'real life', but I'm not an open book to everyone - particularly as there are so many scammers on websites these days. I moderate a dating site, and scammers are very subtle. They like to steal innocuous looking profile pictures to set up fake accounts that won't get spotted using TinEye or Google Reverse Image Search, for example.


Wait until your pseudonyms start developing their own distinct personalities.....
