Selling eggs

Post: # 193842Post Touchwood »

We put a sign out yesterday (first time we have had surplus eggs to sell) and first thing this morning had someone knocking at the door wanting to buy some. Small thing but what a rush!!!!

Here in Lincolnshire where living is relatively cheap we buy free range eggs from neighbours at 50p for half dozen. This week I had an extra bantum egg thrown in for free too.

Compared to shops though you are selling them cheaply.

£1/6 is the going rate for eggs at teh door round here.. and tis a nice simple round figure. FR eggs in the shop are about 1.50 for 6, so they are getting a good deal, and we are not selling at a loss (which i think i would be at 50p)

We're more than happy with £1 for 6. I've seem signs for as much as £1.50 for 6 but we're not doing it to make a profit, just to cover costs.
I nagged OH like hell end of last year because he was selling to his mates at work for 50p for 6 eggs and wanted to buy in more birds to meet demand and yet I never had any eggs to cook with. I'm not expecting to make a profit but I'm buggered if I'm subsidising others to have freerange eggs when there is never any for me to use.
We seem to have struck a happy medium at the moment but only time will tell.

the other thing i did is have an egg skelter that is for our eggs.. it holds 24 - so I only ever sell the surplus over 24 we have. - and i keep them in a different place. last year we kept selling eggs even when we had officially run out, and then not have any for ourselves. by keeping them separate.. we dont have that issue anymore.

I sell at £1.40 per half dozen and I have a few families in our village who buy every week and more asking for some who I have to turn down....

The money still hasn't payed for them yet but I think we are close... I keep tabs on everything the chooks have ever cost us and I think we are only about £20 short at the moment.

I'm just making the signpost for our honesty stall - then I need to start on the cart/cabinet thingy... but I can't wait to have our first few euros in the box for our eggs.... even just one euro would do.....

Last night one of the girls from along the road (age 15) came along to buy eggs, as she does every week. (I bet she just comes for a nosey at how the build is going  )

She said "Isn't it cool to know the hens your eggs come from, I bet no-one else in the village can say that" :flower: :flower: :flower: :flower: :flower:

It was so nice to hear someone say that, so I thought I would share.
