it might be me, but this struck me as somewhat strange.
do you *really* think SS people don't read books, don't drink coffee or tea, don't have internet etc?
or am I missing a point?
it sounds as if you were thinking "survival matters" rather than being SS.......I don't think being SS is a bad thing but it's only for those who can afford to have at least a smallholding...

but nothing wrong with being ISH :) we should be proud of ourselves trying to be ISH with all the things we do!!

We're just thinking about if we were TOTALLY self sufficient, which probably doesn't exist. Someone who drinks tea or coffee would be self sufficientISH, unless they grew it themselves, and having the internet would again be relying on someone else. I don't think anyone is saying they want to be totally self sufficient, but thinking about it makes us realise we are lucky to have some things that other people produce.

Yes, I'd got to the stage of thinking that I couldn't preserve any food. Not just because I wouldn't have a freezer or electricity, but I wouldn't have any plastic, glass or metal things to preserve food in. I wouldn't even have salt as I don't live close enough to the sea (that's if I even knew how to actually make salt from seawater!) and have no transport (i.e. horse and cart) to get me there. So I'd probably just die of hunger in my cave.

No glasses would be even worse! I think I need new ones (again) and I can't do without the opticians, in spite of the fact that they talked me into expensive varifocals last time. This time it will be a £29.99 pair of whatever I need most, reading specs probably.
Specsavers don't seem keen on bartering for some reason...

Imagination compensates us for what we are not.
A sense of humour consoles us for what we are.
And wisdom tells us not to worry about it!

GHD's - otherwise I would be dying alone in my cave because nobody would want to talk to me with my birdsnest in its natural state :pale:

muddy: GHDs are a posh brand of hair straightener.

may i just say here I am astounded. since jan this year we've been paying £109 combined gas and electric. we goit a letter this morning saying that due to us giving them meter readings every month on the dot, we'v actually been overpaying and they're dropping our basic direct debit payment to.........

£30 per month because we're low energy users!!!!!!!!!!!! that's a combined charge, taken each month, if we use more than their estimate, they may take more.

all hail the flibble. even james admitted that with a return like that, he's happy to keep switching off lights etc.

Eek! Not that SS! Nice in a way that 'SS' is now being used (by lazy people!) to abbreviate something as positive as self sufficiency (well, self sufficientish is better, but you know what I mean!) :sunny:
