Soap - the dangerous way

Post: # 263745Post frozenthunderbolt »

383gms mutton fat - rendered with bunches of herbs to a pretty green colour several years ago - has been living in my fridge
617gms canola oil

heated to 45-50 celcius

218gms of sodium hydroxide
into
300ml cold water

Cooled to 50 celcius

Poured fat into the lye, went from olive oil yellow/green to brown

mixed with stick blender on low power until like runnyish whipped cream/custard just starting to thicken (trace i hope) had turned whiteish by this stage

poured into silicone bakeware as molds

Popped them in a cardboard box and left them in my room to set and finish saponification.

Got to leave for a week or so, so i'm told.

Thanks to Magestic mountain sage (http://www.thesage.com/calcs/lyecalc2.php) for the lye calculator.

First time i've done it so here's hoping it works.

It's possible you've not mixed it long enough, but only a bit. Trace is usually where you put in additives - herbs EOs etc then keep mixing a bit longer.

But otherwise it sounds fine. Tongue test to see if it's cooked in about a week. If it has a white crust shave that off first.
