skeleton knife

Post: # 224812Post scrap »

A compact but very sturdy little knife.
It was cut from the hefty blade of an old chopper, known in Belgium as a ''hiep''
Most of the rough work was done at my job, during coffeebreaks or whenever the boss was off somewhere...

Total length is just 14 cm,5 mm thick carbon steel.

The cutting edge was hardened at home, using a propane blowtorch and a bowl of ice water.
I thought about polishing the entire knife, but I prefer the worn look and the hammer marks of the old hand-forged blade to show.
So the handle was lightly etched with a mix of vinegar and phosphoric acid to restore the patina.
I'm still contemplating on a sheath, but I'm currently undecided between a wooden magnetised one or a leather one.

Very nice Scrap, you've definitely made a "Little object of desire" there. :salute:
If you go for the magnetised sheath option might the knife be inclined to collect iron filings, metal whiskers etc.

Nice one, looks like it might make a good throwing knife too.Instead of a sheath you could just carve a blade protector out of a bit of hardwood, and hang the knife from your belt.
