I've tried crocheting with jute once, I learned to not let it "slide" like softer yarns do. It'll rub your skin raw if you let it. Good luck!

I made a fab wee bag from jute string.... yes it did hurt, I remember struggling to not let it slip through my fingers just pick up and wrap round (it was knitted)

lol! If you're quite dextrous you could try doing the knitting/crocheting with cotton gloves on? I've also heard that freezing it first can make it easier to work with - I'm looking to make a shopping bag that I've seen a pattern for - but maybe I won't

How did the slippers turn out?

...um, how can I make that?...

I've made bags and baskets with jute string, I think the only way I spared my fingers was to for go my usual technique and worry about the tension - otherwise I haven't got any intelligent suggestions- not very helpful I'm afraid! :(

I have worked with jute before, it does hurt your hands! I found I just had to do a little at a time and it was not so bad in the long run...

Working crochet with harsh fibres I cut a finger out of an old leather glove, when that wore out cut another one and so on.

If you want some of my rug wool stash for slipper soles just say  and I'll pop some in the post
