I've been messing about with a drop spindle for a while. I'm told that you can do it with anything you can shove a stick through and then spin, even a pencil and CD. My drop spindle was a cheapo and I was quite amazed when I had a go on a friends expensive one as it was much easier. She tells me its because the balance is better. I suppose you get what you pay for. I've given up on the drop spindle now and last week I got my spinning wheel. I managed to persuade myself that, with raw fleece going for next to nothing, it should pay for itself quite quickly. I've got it working and have made some passably knittable yarn already. I think it will be better when I'm so good I can chat and listen to the radio and stuff at the same time. We'll see! ww.
